Weathered Stone Hercules Garden Statue, France Mid 20th C.
This French mid-20th C. limestone type composite stone garden figure of Hercules has a strong, classical presence, standing in contrapposto with his large club held at his side and the Nemean lion at his feet. The weathered surface, softened details, and natural patina from moss and lichen give the sculpture depth and age. He stands on a rectangular integral plinth with a reeded edge, raised on a three section cast plinth that provides height and structure. Twentieth century garden figures of mythological heroes drew on ancient prototypes and were popular in European landscapes, where Hercules symbolized strength, endurance, and protection within formal gardens and more relaxed country settings. Wear consistent with age and use. 18.5"w x 19"d x 48"h
