Iron Serpent and Twig Garden Bench, English Mid 20th C.
English mid 20th C. white-painted cast iron serpents form the legs and back supports of this garden bench, their arched necks and scaled bodies carrying the seat's soft green recently painted wood slats. The serpent and twig form is inspired by the Coalbrookdale style. Cast iron garden furniture emerged as a significant industry in Britain and America through the mid-19th century, allowing decorative forms previously reserved for carved stone or expensive joinery to be produced affordably for middle-class gardens. This bench places that aristocratic vocabulary directly into the garden in a form both functional and fully committed to its ornamental conceit. Wear consistent with age and use.
